Retail developer Robert Stark has put his money where his mouth is when it comes to a large-scale downtown redevelopment project he has discussed for more than two years.

Mr. Stark on May 2 paid $1.3 million for a long-vacant, five-floor office building at the southwest corner of West Third Street and St. Clair Avenue, according to Cuyahoga County land records. Darryl Whitehead, director of marketing for Robert L. Stark Enterprises, said the company plans to move its 50 employees downtown from Woodmere Village as it pursues its downtown ventures.

Mr. Stark, CEO of Stark Enterprises, is wasting no time making the property ready for whatever is next. Fliers on the building this afternoon announce that Grossman Inc. of Cleveland plans an auction at 10 a.m. on May 22 for the fixtures of the office building and the former Titanic Restaurant at ground level.

The site adjoins parking lots owned by Weston, the big Solon-based real estate company. Mr. Stark and Weston have discussed jointly redeveloping those lots as office, retail and residential properties that would be adjacent to the Warehouse District, Public Square and Tower City Center.

Mr. Whitehead said Mr. Stark was not available for comment today, but the company will discuss its plans at a yet-to-be scheduled news conference next week at Cleveland City Hall. Mr. Whitehead said he did not know if the company would seek city incentives for moving its headquarters downtown.
